I spent two months photographing the city of Medellin for National Geographic Magazine. At the time, Medellin was one of the most violent cities in the world. I had lived in Colombia for five years prior to this project and have always been interested in how a country and a culture digests and metabolizes such a high level of insecurity daily, especially violence so close to home. Most of the Colombians I met had experienced at least some level of violence and many had experience unmentionable levels. For the project I spent time with five people from Medellin from a diverse set of socio-economic backgrounds exploring their world and their resilient, vibrant and ferocious city.
